"The Director's Room" is a research-based exhibition projects initiated by the Suzhou Museum of Contemporary Art (Suzhou MoCA) , dedicated to the study of film directors. Marking the 120th anniversary of Cai Chusheng's birth, the exhibition presents him as the first director featured in the series. As a pivotal figure in the transition of early Chinese cinema from experimentation to maturity, Cai's life and work vividly illustrate how a director's personal vision can evolve into a dialogue with broader historical contexts. His works also resonates with China's movement from isolation to engagement with the wider world, reflecting a continuous quest to articulate emotional and subjective values through visual expression, and offering a crucial starting point for understanding the intellectual lineage and visual language of Chinese cinema. Seeking to move beyond material displays, the exhibition invites visitors to engage with memory spaces constructed from archives and artefacts. By exploring the director's "room," they are encouraged to create a room of their own.
